Board game costs

A clients question:

Can you please inform me of the cost of production of a typical board game that requires no electronical technology in the product?

That is really impossible to answer. Small quantities of anything cost a lot. Anything under 2500 pcs is better done by volunteers at home. Where do you want to manufacture it and where do you plan on selling it? A manufacturer in China will make only a minimum of 2500 pcs but will probably charge you a similar price to making 5000 for all the setup time etc.

One has to consider that a small production run of say 2500 pcs takes almost as much time as 5000 pcs and not a lot less than 10 thousand. The artwork and engineering is similar. That is why the major game companies would not even consider a production run of less than 100 thousand pcs. Remember too, each production run is different and one has to train the labor, usea similar amount of time whatever the size of the run to have the machines idle while plates and dies are installed, and maybe have to purchase quantities of materials or components that are only available in bulk.

Consider the materials and even the grades of materials used, the style of packaging from individual items to the number in an outer shipper, the grade of the outer shipper and it's markings. Currency values and freight rates are also very volatile. The list goes on.

So, it's not so easy to design and manufacture a game, let alone market it.  I hope this helps a bit.
