President’s Corner

At our last meeting we had as a guest speaker, Ben Leone. Ben was the young man we sent to the Air Academy in Oshkosh. Ben seems to have a large interest in aviation and hopes to learn to fly someday and The Air Academy is a great place for young people to explore aviation and its principles. The students build projects such a wing ribs and rockets and they also perform experiments in aerodynamic principles. Ben told us part of their time was spent flying flight simulators. At the conclusion of the meeting, Ben received an introductory flight lesson from Tom Cucarese in the Propbuster 150. (It was brought to my attention by former owner Frank Zahora that the 150 has the same N-number as the Starship Enterprise-17001, if you’re a Star Trek fan.) Chapter 859 really enjoyed Ben’s presentation and hopes that our actions may have planted a seed that will encourage Ben to go forward and pursue his dream of flight.

Tom Cucarese is still taking bids for the concrete work needed to start work on the hanger. When work on the hanger begins, we are going to need volunteers to help build it. This project will be a great undertaking and will require a lot of work, but I am sure with this group it will be a lot of fun. We would like to make the building a fun place to share our hobbies, possibly decorating the place with aviation artifacts. We have received some old jet engine casings and miscellaneous airplane parts from one of the local schools to get us started, so if you have any cool aviation artifacts lying around, we can find a use for them. When the hanger is completed we can start building or completing some of our airplane projects as other chapters are doing.

The Propbuster 150 is one of the greatest contributions to our airport. The sacrifices that were made to raise the money to purchase the airplane and set the flying club up were well worth it for those who take advantage of the opportunity. At $35.00 an hour you can’t find a better deal. I had the airplane in Alliance one day and several pilots were looking at it. When they found out what I was paying they couldn’t believe it. The comment was, “Those are 1970s prices, man!” The thing that amazes me is that there are still open slots for membership. Right now the 150 is the only rental plane on the field, so if you’re looking for the most affordable flying, you need to join.

See you at the next meeting and try to bring someone new with you – Rick Ramsey

PRESENTERS, EXHIBITORS, AIRCRAFT LINE UP FOR OCTOBER LIGHT-SPORT EXPO
The U.S. Sport Aviation Expo, scheduled for October 28-31 at Florida's Sebring Regional Airport, is shaping up as a significant source of late-breaking information on sport pilot/light-sport aircraft (SP/LSA). All 70 allotted exhibitor slots have sold out, requiring organizers to add more to satisfy the high demand.

This event will bring together LSA aircraft and kit manufacturers, component providers, dealers, flight schools, mechanic services, parts suppliers, insurance providers, and others with possible business interests in this exciting new field. Several types of eligible LSAs, including fixed-wing, weight-shift trikes, and powered parachutes, will be on display both inside and outside the airport facility. These aircraft will also conduct continual flight demos during the event.

Several well-known authorities and industry leaders will present SP/LSA and other informational forums during the event, which is being presented by Chrysler. Confirmed are Sue Gardner and Marty Weaver from the FAA; Dan Schultz of ASTM International; John and Martha King of the King Schools; Phil Lockwood of Lockwood Aviation Supply; and Jimmy Zavez, John Calla, Loctite Corp.; and Larry Burke of the Light Aircraft Manufacturing Association (LAMA). Several EAA representatives, led by President Tom Poberezny, also plan to attend the Expo.

EAA members who present a current membership card are admitted for $8 per day and $25 for the full event (Thursday-Sunday). General admission per day is $10 and $30 for all four days. Children ages 12 and under will be admitted free.

For more information and updates, stay tuned to the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo website, www.sport-aviation-expo.com, or visit EAA's sport pilot website, www.sportpilot.org.

Carrollton Annual Eclipse Fly-in
Did anyone get the chance to make it out to Carrollton annual Eclipse Fly-in? The family got the chance Saturday and it turned out to be a really nice. They had a large variety of light experimentals, ultralights and Parasails. The Parasails were really stealing the show this year with at least three up in the air at any given time. They were giving rides (for a small fee). I got to speak to an instructor from Rogers, Ohio about his parasail. It’s a real simple machine to fly. Goose the throttle and the sail inflates and away you go. (It has a top speed of 28 mph so I hope you like going nowhere fast.) I asked him if he would be interested in coming in to talk to our Chapter members about the Parasail and to give rides for a small donation. We are to try to set something up for the Third weekend in Sept.
Stay Tune for more info.

Back to the fly-in, there was a real nice crowd there. Met up with several Chapter members and some pilots from the airpark. There were many different ultralights on the flight line. It was really surprising to see that almost all have Ballistic Chutes on them. Some were just plain simple flying machines and some had all the latest gizmos on them, ranging from a moving map GPS’s to hand held radios and digital readout instrument pods. Most of the pilots were from the local area. There were also a lot of campers there and they look like they were going to have a big bonfire that night. Looked like fun, old fashion camping and early morning flying. A local group was selling some old fashion hotdogs and pies, but the restaurant was doing a real good business too. We stuck with the hotdogs to avoid the lines. Will be looking forward to next year. – Dave Tulenko

New Member
We of Chapter 859 would like to welcome a new Chapter member and Propbusters member Austin Cable.
Austin is a recently certificated private pilot and is now checked out in the club plane. Austin’s father is a private pilot, and his sister did a tandem jump at Thunder in the Ville in June. Lets all welcome him at the next meeting. - Tom
