President’s Corner

Hello! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well or at least dry. With the last couple of weeks of storms and downpours, not much hasn't been drenched or damaged.

If you couldn’t make the last meeting you missed out on a very interesting one. Despite the low turn out of members and young people, Denise Trenor of the Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics gave a great presentation. Using the marvels of electronics and computers she took us on a journey through aviation history leading up to the present and onto the very near future. We also got a virtual tour of PIA’s teaching facilities which offer a very intense school program and have a lot of connections with Aviation companies.

I would like to take this moment to talk to everyone about the changes we’ve been making over the last six months on how we do things. The first change is that we’re trying to make the Chapter meetings more interesting for everyone. With the help of our new officers, especially Rick Ramsey, we’ve been coming up with some great programs which have been very successful. Even when a speaker has had to cancel at the last minute, we’ve been very lucky in being able to find someone to fill the spot. We’ve also changed the set-up of the Chapter Business meeting. After reading many other Chapter web sites, we found that almost all have business meetings set aside from their regular Chapter meetings. And business meetings being what they are, it’s generally presenting bills to be paid, keeping track of chapter finances, hearing from committees on how their fund raising projects are coming and other dry, boring stuff. But it is also a time to hear about what we are doing wrong and what we are doing right. Saying that, I want to remind you that the meetings are open to every one. And as you know, any major decisions will be put before the membership for discussion and vote.

Another change has been made is in the Chapter’s newsletter. We have set up a web site newsletter for those who have email addresses. One of a Chapter’s major expenses has been in the newsletter printing and mailing costs and if you have a roster of 40 members, it can be good piece of change per month. The web newsletter is something new, I grant you, but it offers easier access for all, one click of the mouse and you’re there. For those who get a newsletter in the mail, what is received is no different than the electronic newsletter except that the picture quality is not as good. But remember, the newsletters are only as good as the people that read them and contribute, so if you have any information, stories or ideas to add, please let us know. It normally goes to print the week before the meeting so email Don Green (don at 123oy.com) if you have anything to add. And, if you are on the computer, check it out a couple of days ahead of the meeting. Updates are always being added and there are always improvements being made, so bear with Don. A newsletter is the heartbeat of a Chapter, without it pumping out information the Chapter as a whole will grow weak.

Now for some interesting news There has been some behind the scenes work going on with several projects involving the Chapter. One is the possibility of starting up of a Skydiving school at the airpark. This is still very much in the planning stages but Rick Ramsey is trying to organize it and it really shows promise. The other is the start up of a new R/C Club. With the disbandment of the Sky Hawks, there was some interest in starting up a new Club. Since flying and building R/C’s has always sparked interest in wanting to fly real airplanes, this could re-ignite interest in aviation with both the young and old.

There are a couple of other ideas on the drawing board and we’ll keep you updated on those. Please all aircraft owner chapter members please bring your aircraft to the next meeting for the aircraft rides.

Well, that’s all folks, time to put the soapbox away ‘til next month. See you at the next meeting.

Dave

Business meeting report - May 20 th
Hi everyone,
There was little business to discuss We received a letter from the Thunder in the 'Ville committee requesting a donation. It was decided to make a donation of $50.00 to them.

In other business, we discussed upcoming events for the chapter and the Chapter Picnic to be held at the fireworks show. We also discussed setting up a booth to have a bake sale to raise money for the Chapter's general treasury. Ideas are to be presented at the next Chapter meeting.

We also talked about the establishment of a Sky Diving School at the airport. Further discussion will be needed with the airport authority.

Discussion followed on Chapter PR with the local media. So far we haven't been in the papers even though notices have been put out. Don Green will check on that.

Don told the board members about a couple of ideas to improve the Chapter web site.

Meeting closed with general discussion

Chapter Business meetings occur the third Wednesday of each month.
Next meeting: June 16th
Time 7:00pm
At the Airport.

Chapter Picnic - Sat 26th June
The Chapter Picnic will be held on the night of the fireworks at the Thunder in the Ville. We are thinking about setting up an EAA Tent to sell Sky Diving (Tandem jumps) Tickets and to have a Chapter Bake Sale. So Ladies (and Guys too) start planning your favorite treats. As evening draws near we will all gather for a cook out and a ring side seat far from the crowds at the new Chapter Building.

Recycle Project
Thanks to the efforts of all our members and the help of four Dollar General Stores, we were able to turn in a check to the Chapter Building Fund in the amount of $1020.00. Keep bringing out your recyclables to the old clubhouse. It has been your help that has made this project a BIG success.

Chapter Hanger Update
The plans (for the building) and the anchor bolts have arrived, and we are waiting for the engineer to complete the floor plan and obtain the necessary building permits. Larry and I plotted the four corners and received approval of the airport authority and our engineer. Once we have our floor plans and permits, we can get bids on all or partial concrete work.
We also have provided a culvert (compliments of Geary Bates) for the front of Jim Wrighte's building so that he now has direct access to his building and we have his road.
We placed our order for the building less than a week ahead of a 22% price increase, along with FIFTY other people, and we are waiting our turn in production.

EAA Air Academy Sessions Closing Fast
*****************************************
Response for this year's EAA Air Resident Summer Youth Camps
has been astonishing. Aviation enthusiasts and their families know
that there's no better place to experience aviation than in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin--home of EAA. The EAA Air Academy's Resident Summer Youth
Camp is an accredited program geared for aviation minded boys and
girls age 10-18. Professional educators, Certified Flight Instructors
and students from the nation's leading aviation colleges conduct an
array of hands-on aviation and leadership activities. Camps take place
at the EAA Museum and Leadership Center at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh,
Wisconsin, with lodging at the EAA Air Academy Lodge. By popular demand,
EAA expanded the age range for the Air Academy to include camps for 10
and 11 year-olds. EAA now accommodates youths ages 10 to 18 through a
wide range of camp experiences. But demand to participate is high, so
hurry. To enroll or learn more about each camp, visit www.airacademy.org
or call 888/EAA-EAA9. EAA Air Academy also offers adults three different
heritage camps featuring the B-17, Spirit of St. Louis replica, and
Ford Tri- Motor airplanes. Visit the EAA website
