President’s Corner

Christmas Greetings

I hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving and survived being taken out by the the better half for a day of bargain hunting. I found a way out on the way over to the mall by telling the wife; "here is my life's savings have fun". I will probably regret that for a long time. Then go find a Sears store and check out all the tools that you would love to have in your workshop, I assure you, you won't be alone. After spending an hour or two there go back down into the mall, which is like trying to get into traffic during the rush hour on the Parkway in Pittsburgh. Your next stop is to the book store to check out the Aviation books and Magazines. If you remember when you were learning to fly, we were always taught to stay with your airplane to better your chances of being found. If you try venture out to find your better half, the chances will be next to zero so the next best option is to go find a nice coffee shop and drink about six cups of coffee, enjoy the sights and odds are within a couple of hours they will come across you and they will demand to know where you have been. (with 6 cups of coffee who needs a pilots license - Ed)

Christmas is not far off, it is the most fun and rewarding time of the year. It is a time when families get together, a time for sharing and giving. A time when we can throw all our diets out the window, because everyone we visit will have tons of Christmas cookies to get rid of. There is always the New Year to get restarted.
I hope all our members have a great Christmas with their families and Santa Claus brings everyone that special gift. From my family to yours "Merry Christmas and a Happy new Year"

Dave, Nancy and Kristin

The Upcoming New Year

This past year had mixed reviews, we tried to make the Chapter meetings as interesting as possible, some things worked out some didn't. I would like to thank Rick Ramsey for always coming up with a plan "B". This past year has been a bit of a blur for me, I am sorry to admit I haven't been able to give the 110% the Chapter deserved. My thanks to the officers, trustees and devoted members who stepped in and gave their best.
We were hoping to have the new Chapter building under roof by now, unfortunately the bids coming in for the pillar bases and the concrete floor were a little more than we expected. We could have poured the floor ourselves, but the frost wall and pillar bases is a whole different ball game as they have to be right on the money with the measurements for the beams. Tom Cucarese has been working very hard trying to get the lowest bid possible. He been in contact with more contractors than I care to know.
Time is on our side, we have the complete building including the hanger door on site, we will continue to bring in the extra funds through the Chapter's recycling project to help boost the project. I would like to thank everyone in the Chapter who continue to bring out the papers and alum. cans. Right now I am cleaning out the Chapter building once a week. On the average bringing in over $25.00 or better a week. So keep it coming.
One thing that concerns me is that the meeting attendance and special event attendance has been dropping off over the past year. I hope like me that it has been just a busy year for every one. Maybe we are not getting the word out as well as we should. I would like to hear any suggestions you might have.
Most of you who have computers now get the chapter newsletters online. Don Green has been the web master, designing and maintaining it for us. Not only are members able to read the newsletter online, we have joined the ranks of many other fellow Chapters on the Web. The electronic newsletter has saved the Chapter a great deal in printing and mailing costs, which will rise again next year, it also gives us instant access to past newsletters and web links. Some of us can't get to sit down in front of a computer and check our e-mails as much as we like, so if you prefer an old fashion newsletter, e-mail Don and let him know and he will make the switch over.

While on the subject of newsletters, I noticed that we haven't given much attention to what our members have been doing with their projects and airplanes. So starting with the January newsletter, we are going to introduce a new section dedicated to our members projects and airplanes. This is to include articles and pictures sent in from our members, web links for building information and passing on tit bit information from magazines and building seminar dates. Now for the tough part, we need a catchy name for the new part of the newsletter. Suggestions are welcome. We are going to try make the up coming year more interesting and fun with some new and some old ideas. So bear with us as we try our best to make it happen for everyone. As always any ideas are welcome.

Project Update
This just in, Jerry Goodwin has just started his flight testing of his Amphibian Home built. Jerry has been doing the flight testing at the airpark. Taking it nice and slow.

Don Green and I have restarted my Long EZ project over the last two months, fiber glassing two engine cowls, working on the fuselage, assembling an electric nose gear, and starting to put together parts for the canard. Here is the bottom cowl, note the carbon fiber in the middle, applied for stiffness. Total weight 4 1/2 lb.

Chapter Dues
It is that time of the year again for the $15 Chapter dues. Enclosed in the mailed newsletters is a membership form. Remember national membership has to be up to date. Please fill out the form so we can update our files on you.

Chapter Banquet

On Friday December 3 at 6:00 PM we will be holding our annual Christmas Dinner at the Naples restaurant in Steubenville.
Ordering will be done off the menu. I do hope to see all the members and their families there. There is lots of good food and good company. John Buckmelter will be our Guest Speaker.

NASA X-43A Scramjet Achieves Mach 10
NASA's X-43A unmanned scramjet aircraft reached nearly 7,000 miles per hour, or Mach 9.8, on Tuesday afternoon to set an unofficial all-time speed record for an aircraft powered by an air-breathing engine. The research vehicle flew at an altitude of approximately 111,000 feet on its third and final flight, which took place off the coast of California over the Pacific test range. The aircraft, mated to a modified Pegasus booster rocket, launched from NASA's B-52B at about 47,000 feet. Engine burn was about 10 seconds, after which it dropped into the ocean.

November Meeting Minutes (11/2/04)

The November meeting of EAA Chapter 859 was held in The Ralph Freshwater Terminal at the Jefferson County Airpark, with ten officers and members in attendance.

VP Rick Ramsey opened the meeting and Dick Hazelip led the membership in a prayer.

Tom Cucarese gave the building committee report. All bids received for the concrete portion of the building have exceeded the engineer’s estimate. There are three more companies interested on submitting bids.

A motion was made by Don Green, and seconded by Dick Hazelip, to allow transfer of funds from savings to checking to meet the building needs.

It was announced that the December Christmas dinner would be held at Naples Restaurant on Friday December 3’rd at 6:00 pm. John Buchmelter will talk on aviation.

The subject of low attendance at the monthly meeting was discussed. It was agreed that we seek input from as many members as possible to bring up attendance.

The member of the year was voted on and will be announced at the dinner.

Dick Hawkins was re-elected to another term as trustee.

Jerry Bailie won the 50/50 raffle.

A motion to adjourn was made by Rich Jeffers and a second by Cathy Cucarese.

A film on the B-17 was shown.

Directors Meeting (11/1/2004)

A Board of Directors meeting of the Experimental Aircraft Association Chapter 859 was held on 11/1/2004 at Naples Restaurant in Steubenville Ohio with the following officers in attendance:

President Dane Tulenko, VP Rick Ramsey, Trustees Dick Hazelip, and Dick Hawkins, Newsletter Editor Don Green, Treasurer Cathy Cucarese, and Secretary Tom Cucarese.

Tom Cucarese reported that he is still receiving bids for the concrete portion of the building, and that all bids have exceeded the engineers estimate.

A motion was defeated to amend the bylaws for a two consecutive term limit for officers.

It was decided not to sponsor a youth to the EAA Air Academy this year because of building construction.

There was some discussion of the chapter setting up an informational booth at the fireworks this summer.

Suggestions for the next years activities were:
A fly in
A group trip to Oshkosh
Participation in Thunder in the Ville fireworks
A float in the Fourth of July parade
A mall show

Kitfox Sweepstake.

Dear Fellow EAAers:

EAA Chapter 517, in western Montana, is conducting a fund raising sweepstakes. The Grand Prize is a beautiful KitFox Model V that was completed in 1997. This airplane has approximately 110 hours on the engine and airframe. I've attached a copy of a press release.

It is our hope that your Chapter will be kind enough to alert your members through your Chapter newsletter and if your Chapter has a web site, we would appreciate you adding a link to our website. We do have pictures of the airplane, more detailed information about the airplane, as well as the rule for the sweepstakes and the sweepstakes entry form.

We will only be issuing a maximum of 4,000 tickets and as long as we receive a $25.00 donations for at least 1,800 tickets the Grand Prize KitFox will be awarded. Please see the rules for complete details.

I will keep you posted, once or twice more, to let you know about ticket availability. Your help spreading the word about our sweepstakes is greatly appreciated. If we can help your Chapter somewhere down the line, please let me know.

Thank you,
Steve Rossiter
