President’s Corner

This month I am a little short on words, and I am not up to par with the newsletter. Last week my father passed away. I would like to thank everyone in the Chapter for the flowers, cards, food, emails and phone calls. Your thoughts and visits to the funeral home were deeply appreciated.
On behalf of the chapter I would also like to thank Dinny Walford for an interesting and, as always, amusing presentation on winter flying at the February meeting. Dinny has over 20 thousand hours flying and has accumulated so many stories that he kept us on the edge of our seats describing just some of them. Some basic tips included a warning that if your aircraft has been placed in a heated hanger and is then taken out into even a light snow you must be vigilant about ice forming as the snow will melt on the wings and then probably freeze. Get a weather briefing and dress warmly, an off airport landing might not leave you in a position to don extra gear even if it is stashed in the back. Also, don’t just look at the wings during a preflight, but feel them for any ice and don’t forget the tail. Dinny related some stories on horizontal stabilizer icing he had encountered and the early signs that included a rise in stalling speed and the porpoising affect it caused. Be careful to be safe out there.
Many thanks also to Tom Curcarese for a nice show and tell on the effect of cold weather on the different types and grades of aviation oil.

March Meeting
At the March meeting we will be having a interesting round robin type of discussion. Rick Ramsey and Tom Cucurase will be presenting a discussion on emergency procedures. Rick has put together some interesting informational handouts for everyone. Tom will be talking from an instructor’s point of view. If you are flying or flying with someone, it might just save your life.
