President’s Corner

Hello everyone, I hope you are all staying warm. Looks like old Mother Nature likes to tease us to no end. After those couple of days of 70 degree weather, she came back with a strong reminder of what season we are in. All we can do is hunker down and wait for the return of the warm weather. In the meantime we can grab the honey-do lists, go work in the workshop, break out the aviation videos or catch up on some reading of Sport and Aviation Magazines. OR, the best one of all, sneak on out to the airport and grab a cup of hot coffee and do some hanger flying. Chances are a trip out to the King’s Restaurant might be included. Let’s hope the warm weather is just around the corner.
It was nice to see a good turn-out at the January meeting. We didn’t have a guest speaker lined up for the meeting, but we were able to put a last minute presentation together on Composites. Don Green and I brought out the engine cowling that we made from a fiberglass mold. Don Green talked about some of the tools and materials that were used in the process.
I hope we can get more of this type of meeting in the months to come, involving more members who are building or restoring. It was interesting and a lot of fun.
We also had a special guest attending the meeting. Ben Leon, you remember, is the young gentleman whom we had the honor and pleasure of sending up to EAA Flight Academy. Ben is very interested in becoming a pilot. We were able to send him home with information on the Ohio Valley Flight Academy. I think we will be seeing a lot more of Ben at future meetings and, as the weather permits, in flight training with Tom Curcarese.
Being apart of an EAA Chapter is the sharing of the love of aviation in whatever form it might take with anyone who has an interest in it. It is always a welcome sight to see a young person at a Chapter meeting, I only wish we could get more of them involved. If you know of a young person pass the word or better yet bring him or her along to a chapter meeting. In the mean time stay warm and we will look forward to seeing everyone at the February Meeting.

February Meeting

Date: February 1, 2005
Place: Jefferson Co. Airpark- Pilot’s Lounge
Time: 7:00pm
With the extreme cold weather we have been having, we have asked Dinny Wilford of Ohio Valley Flight School to come in give a talk on the do’s and don’ts of cold weather flying. Dinny has talked at our Chapter meetings before, sharing with us his many flight experiences. Pass the word on to other pilots as it should be an interesting evening.
In case Dinny is not able to make the meeting we have a plan “B”. Tom Curcarese has put together a nice show and tell on the effect of cold weather on the different types and grades of aviation oil. See you there.

Wood, Glue, Rivets and Dreams

This month we are adding a new section to newsletter devoted to the members of our Chapter who have projects underway. The name of this section comes from Dean Haun. This month we are hearing from fellow member Jerry Goodwin. Jerry is restoring a Coot and he is sharing his story and pictures of his project. Next month we will be hearing from Bob Miller and his Quickie project.

My daughter and I drove clear to Oregon last year to buy this Coot, I didn't trust the trailer for a cross country trip so paid to have it shipped home. I've had it about a year and a half and have done what I call a cosmetic restoration on it. The windshield needed replaced and it needed a paint job etc. I finally trailered it over to the airport (hangar 24) and after a week or so of putting the wings on and convincing the engine to run I got to taxi it up and down the runway a couple times before Thanksgiving. THAT was exciting. The engine is the Continental 210 hp rear engine from a Skymaster, just like the one we sold on e-bay! I talked to Dick Guenther about doing an annual on it and he agreed to look at it but seems a little reluctant because it's an experimental. I need to dig a little deeper in to the regulations cause the way I understand it is the annual for an experimental is not near as extensive as for a certified aircraft. Maybe you can shed some light on the subject?

Chapter Mail Box
Here is something that came from Oshkosh that might be of interest to our Chapter Pilots. It is a follow-up to the original EAA e-Alert to all EAA Chapters in Ohio. I have heard from a lot of you that the $100.00 airplane tax that was created 2-years ago is not an equal tax for all types of aircraft and needs to be adjusted to better reflect the actual size of general aviation aircraft. Jim Gorman, EAA Board Member Emeritus, has talked to his local Ohio House of Representatives member concerning how to resolve this issue. His representative (District 73, Bill Hartnett) feels the issue can be resolved by introducing a revision to the budget line for the tax rates and is now working toward that end. Jim will keep me informed and I will rely those updates to you as they become available. Bottom line, it will be up to you and your Chapter members to rally your local Representatives to support the revision at the appropriate time. This is what they will be working toward - or something very close to this:

Proposed Aircraft Registration Fee (tax):
aircraft with 2-seats - $35.00 per year
aircraft with 3/4 seats - $75.00 per year
aircraft with 5/6 seats - $100.00 per year
aircraft with 7/8 seats - $200.00 per year
aircraft with 9/10 seats - $500.00 per year
aircraft with 11+ seats - $750.00 per year

If you can think of a better division of registration fees or a different way of resolving this issue please let me know. Please use me as your sounding board for ideas and suggestions and give Representative Hartnett time to work his legislative "magic".

Airbus A380
Well, it's here, it's big and it's beautiful, in a plus-size kind of way and can be fitted with up to a thousand seats. This massive double decker aircraft with components built in 15 plants in four countries has been ordered by Virgin Atlantic. The planes will have on-board casinos and even suites with double beds. "Maybe now there will be two ways of getting lucky on a Virgin plane," Branson quipped to reporters. First flight is scheduled for March.

EAA is sponsoring a two-day ground-school course for ultralight flight instructors March 12 to March 13. The course is open to those working on their instructor rating or for existing instructors wanting to sharpen their skills. The course will be held at EAA headquarters in Oshkosh... (www.eaa.org)

The Savvy Aviator #14: Engine Cooling -- Less Is More
If your CHTs are running warmer than you'd like, odds are that you've got leaky cooling baffles under your cowling. Fixing those leaks is usually simple -- and the less air leaks, the more is available to cool the cylinders.
