Hello everyone.

This past month has been a sad one for our country with the amount of destruction that hurricanes Katrina and Rita have dealt the Gulf States. It seems no matter where you go you will meet people who have relatives or friends who live there.
Our hearts and best wishes go out to them. My wife’s aunt who lives in Gulfport, Miss. had her house totally destroyed by the winds and has moved to Indiana to stay with relatives. We received pictures of her house and the neighborhood when they were allowed to return. Just one word “unbelievable”
At the last meeting a collection can was passed around the members for the victims of Katrina. I am proud to say $78.00 was collected. Our donation was added to a much larger donation $5500.00 collected by the students of Weir High School and will be going to the Red Cross. I was told to pass along their thanks to the members of our EAA Chapter for our generous donation. My thanks to everyone for being so generous.
If you have a favorite charity, please donate what you can to help out.
The next meeting will be at the Airport Terminal building. Bring a friend or a young person and introduce them to Sport Aviation.

See you there
Dave T.

Chapter 513 Fly-In Nets Ton-and-a-Half of Supplies (see full story)
It's amazing what a group of committed, organized EAAers can do to benefit a worthy cause, and these days in Southern Louisiana and the Gulf Coast, there is no shortage of worthy causes. EAA Chapter 513 in Houma, Louisiana, changed the emphasis of this year's third annual Cajun Fly-in from fun and fellowship to the more serious task of collecting relief supplies (about 3000 lbs) for Hurricane Katrina evacuees. The Chapter's home base, Houma-Terrebonne Airport (HUM), is about 45 miles southwest of New Orleans, but it became a destination for about two-dozen aircraft throughout the day Saturday, September 17.

Young Eagles Day - Sept 25
Today's Young Eagle Flight turned out to be a great time despite the cross wind and haze. We were able to take 10 boys and girls for their first ride and they had a great time. Some were a little more nervous than others but thanks to Rick, Don and Dean everyone had a great time.
We would like to thank fellow members: Pilots Rick Ramsey and Don Green for taking the kids up, donating their time with the Prop Buster Plane and for doing a great job with the kids while flying. Thanks also to Dean Haun for doing the paper work and entertaining the kids with his great sense of humor. If there was a nervous kid in the crowd, Dean had them laughing. And Tom Cucarese and Larry Dotson also for lending a hand when needed.

As always there are several stories to be told. Some of the kids were ready to become pilots and all the kids got a chance to see what it felt to handle the controls under the watchful eyes of Don and Rick. Given the chance, a few would even have tried to land the plane. Hearing the after flight stories between the kids leaves you with the feeling that this is a large part of what the EAA is all about. Maybe, just maybe, the seeds we planted today will grow into the new pilots of tomorrow. Good work Guys!!!!

Chapter Logo:
During our May chapter meeting hosted by Jon and Jennette Meriwether, Jon cut out a 24 inch diameter ¼ inch steel logo using his plasma cutter. Rick Ramsey has now completed painting it. This is to be attached to the side of the building. Many thanks to Jon and Rick.

Hanger Update:
Chapter members have been quite busy at the airpark this month and the siding of the hanger is now 99.9% complete. We were shorted a piece of channel for the bottom section of the hanger bi-fold door but we will be receiving that from the building manufacturer by the end of this week. We will also be meeting with our contractor on what we will need for the electrical phase of this. If you are an electrician, we will be needing your help for the wiring, plugs, and lighting. Once the electrical part is done we can have the building inspected and start using it.
Contact Tom Cucarese if you can help.

Fly-in Committee:
At the Sept meeting it was decided on to organize a Chapter Fly-in for next year during the Thunder in the Valley Festival at the airpark. Volunteers for the committee include Bob Miller, Larry Dotson, Rick Ramsey, and Tom Cucarese. The fly-in will be a simple one day event involving many forms of aviation. We will look forward to seeing what the committee comes up with. If you are interested in being part of the committee, contact any of the committee members. Ideas are welcomed and needed.

Christmas Banquet:
The Chapter Christmas dinner will be held in Steubenville at the Naples Restaurant Friday 2nd December 6:00 PM. Tom Cucarese has made the arrangements. There will be no other chapter meeting in December.

The Unsung Hero of Aviation DVD
This article comes from fellow member Dean Haun. It is a computer link he found called “One Six Right”. It is an inspiring documentary film that reveals a special look at the unsung hero of aviation, the local Airport, through the life, history and struggle of an airport icon: Southern California’s Van Nuys Airport.
The DVD takes viewers on a journey of spectacular aerial sequences and tells of a romantic story through the accounts of passionate pilots, air traffic controllers, historians and flight enthusiasts. “One Six Right also explores common misconceptions about General Aviation Airports. This would be a nice aviation DVD or poster for your collection. So check out the link. http://www.onesixright.com/
If you got an interesting aviation story, event or computer link forward it up to Newsletter editor Don Green and he will do his best to post it on the Chapter Web page and snail mail newsletter.

Chapter Raffle:
Looking for a cool Christmas Gift? Well, we might just have what you are looking for. Headquarters is offering each Chapter a Leather EAA jacket for a Chapter Raffle. Raffle tickets will be mailed to all our members in the upcoming month.

Airport Picnic:
On Sept 17 the Jefferson County Airport Authority held their annual picnic. If you didn’t make it you sure missed a fun day with all the usual great food. With Tom Cucarese stoking the fires of the monster blast furnace and cooking all the hamburgers in a mere 15 minutes and Bob Miller joining the band as either lead singer, guitarist or drummer the airport apron filled with many friendly faces all having a great time. John “Boom Boom” Buckmelter did his great harmonica gig and “Jay” an airport employee also played guitar and sang. Dave Hunt provided the sound equipment and many others who I sadly don’t know the names of also played and sang.

FAA issues Hartzell AD for propellers on some older aircraft:
The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive (AD) for mostly older airplanes that have certain Hartzell propellers. The FAA said the AD resulted from two incidents where "Z-shank" blades failed and separated. Teardown inspections detected corrosion in the blade bores. The AD affects about 1,200 aircraft in the U.S. registry.
The AD goes into effect on October 14 and requires the inspection of the propeller blades and other critical propeller parts. " The positive for some aircraft owners is that no action is required if the time-since-overhaul (TSO) of the propeller is 10 years or less on the AD's effective date or the propeller assembly was inspected under a previous Hartzell service bulletin," said Luis Gutierrez, director of regulatory and certification policy. For aircraft where the TSO is not known, the service bulletin has not been complied with, or have a TSO date that is 10 years or older, the FAA has set up deadlines for completing the inspections, ranging from 12 to 36 months.
The affected aircraft may include the Cessna 172, 175, 190, 195, and 421; the Piper PA-23, PA-24, and PA-25; and several other models from Beechcraft, Aero Commander, Grumman, and Mooney. For more information, see AOPA's issue brief.
