HANGER TALK

Got some interesting news coming from the hanger. The Drone is in the building awaiting a make over. Now all is needed is some planning to get started.

The weather has been either raining or really hot on our Saturday get together.

We haven’t got much work done either, but those who came out had some cool refreshments and some stories to share. We did have some additional donations to the Chapter building over the month. And we would like to thank members Paul Parker and Dave Tulenko for them. Paul donated a 500 watt Flood light for the front of the Hanger and Dave donated a drill press for the Hanger Work Shop.

We also would like to thank both Jim and Rick Ramsey for donating their time and material in putting up a gutter and drain above the side entry way on the hanger. No more wet back on those rainy days.

We have procured 15 tons of donated gravel for the approach to the Hanger, a Bobcat for the dirt removal and leveling of the gravel and a compactor to smooth things out. We will be setting this up for a Saturday in August. So if you know how to run a Bob Cat or would like to try your hand at a compactor we sure can use your help and ideas for the project. Stay tuned to your email for a date and time.

On one those hot Saturdays, we did have a visit of 15 soccer kids who came up from the soccer fields to see an airplane flying. Too hot for any flying. So the kids got treated to a cool water or pop and got to see the Prop Buster plane. Not a wasted day after all.

There is going to be another Hot Dog Roast on August 12, at the hanger. Hopefully we will get the rest of the old wood burned and have a good time doing it.

We will also be setting up some starting dates for the Drone work shop and Prop carving projects. Stay tuned.

A hospitality stop over was set up for any Oshkosh bound pilot at the airpark terminal building. Thanks to Tom Cucarese for arranging this.

NOTE FROM THE PREZ

Hello everyone, just a couple of passing thoughts for everyone. First of all, myself as with every pilot in our area have felt the loss of one of our own. Our heart and prayers go out for a fellow pilot that lost his life over on Rt. 22 a couple of weeks ago. We might never know what exactly caused him to be flying that low. Only he and God will know that. I have sent a sympathy card out to his family from our Chapter.

On another note, I have noticed a drop in attendance at the Chapter meetings. We have not been doing our jobs in getting out the word on what we have lined up for the meetings.

I take the blame for this. We are going to start by trying to get more interesting speakers in and will have it all lined up for the newsletter. I would like to thank Rick Ramsey for coming up with a lot of ideas for the past meetings. In the upcoming months we have put together both interesting speakers along with some other interesting demonstrations. One of the hardest things is gathering new things to do. We will always be looking for those new things, if you know of anyone that would make an interesting speaker let us know, we are always looking.

Next months speaker will be Robert Rift. Of the Dynalifers Corp. Robert is out of Akron and is designing a huge Air Ship that will haul cargo and can be use as a surveillance platform. As of right now he will be in for the August meeting.

Another speaker I hope to be having, comes from Wheeling, John Craig who designs and builds pilot less drones, both for the military and you guess it the CIA.

I been to his shop and it is quite a setup. He even has a Predator size drone that he is designing for Canada. He say he will come up to provide a demonstration of the Drone for us at the airpark

As you can see we are trying, can’t promise something that interesting every month but will be working hard at it to make the meetings more interesting.

See you at the August meeting.

Dave

Question of the Month
Question: What frequency, if any, can be used for air-to-air communications between two aircraft?

Answer: The Federal Communications Commission designates specific frequencies for aircraft and airports to use for specific purposes. For air-to-air communications, the designated frequencies are 122.75 MHz and 122.85 MHz. These frequencies also can be used for private airports that are not open to the public. For a list of designated frequencies for unicom and multicom frequencies, view Table 4-1-2 in the Aeronautical Information Manual.

Engine Beat
Titanium alloyed with vanadium is used in the outer skin of aircraft, fire walls, landing gear, and hydraulic tubing. An estimated 58 tons of the metal is used in the Boeing 777, 43 in the 747, 18 in the 737, 24 in the Airbus A340, 17 in the A330 and 12 in the A320, according to the 2004 annual report of the Titanium Metals Corporation. Generally, newer models use more and widebodies use the most. The Boeing 787 might use 91 tonnes and the A380 77 tonnes, including about 10 or 11 tons in the engines. Fortunately MIT has recently developed a new method of processing Titanium which might reduce production costs by fifty percent or more. It might be hard to believe but titanium is one of the most abundant elements on the planet, but very expensive to refine.

ELSA Repairman Courses Coming to Pennsylvania!

This email to let you, as a chapter president, know that we at Sport Aviation Specialties will be bringing our 16-hour FAA-accepted Experimental Light-Sport Aircraft (ELSA) repairman training courses for weight-shift trikes to the St. Mary's Municipal Airport, St. Mary's, Pennsylvania on October 28-29, 2006, about 120 miles northeast of Pittsburgh. The course is being hosted by Cloud 9 Aerosports, owned by Bob and Lori Keech.

On successful completion of the course, owners of weight-shift ELSAs are eligible for an FAA repairman certificate that allows them to perform their own annual condition inspection. Without the repairman certificate, they would need to find an A&P mechanic willing to perform the inspection. The cost of the course is about the same as the first annual inspection by an A&P.

In addition, students tell us they are glad to have taken the course prior to getting FAA registration & certification of their machine--everything we cover in class is directly applicable to the certification process.

Note that students do not need to own an ELSA to take the course--at the completion of the course they will receive a course completion certificate, which does not have an expiration date. At some point in the future when they get their trike certificated as an ELSA (or when they buy an ELSA-certificated trike), they take the course completion certificate and aircraft registration to their local FAA Flight Standards District Office, who will issue the repairman certificate.

Seats are currently available, but total attendance is limited to 16 students per class. Pre-registration is required and a registration form may be downloaded from the LS Repairman Courses page of our web site, listed below. As soon as possible, those interested in attending should complete the registration and mail it to us along with their tuition check. We can also accept VISA or Mastercard payment by phone. A discounted tuition of $349 is available for EAA members; non-member tuition is $399.

For more information on the courses and other services we provide, please visit our web site at www.SportAviationSpecialties.com. We also welcome phone calls and emails.
